Dog Blog 5-3

It’s a dog’s blog…                                                                  3 May 2010

My people call me Murphy. Not a bad name for a 5 year old border collie. After a pretty rough start to life, I ended up with a pack of border collies, people call it a foster home, and then my people came and chose me from all the others. Life is good…

Every morning I get to go in the car with my person, ali, and we go to a really big yard called a dog park. We always have to go to some place called starrybucks so ali can get help waking up. Just the thought of going to the dog park is plenty to get my energy going.   Hound Hill is the name of our park, and it’s one of my favorite places besides home. So that’s what I will write about, or tell Ali to write about, in my blog.

Hound Hill has been my playground for about a year. There are the regulars who I sniff nearly every day… Benelli, the Brittany spaniel; Chloe and Frankie, the basenjis; lily, the English spaniel; aspen, one of the many many golden retrievers I play with; and then there’s ubu, pete, ranger and marten among the many others.   In the weeks ahead, I will share their stories and some of our adventures .

Lots of people think all we do at the dog park is play. But for me, that’s where I get to do my job. Border collies, like me, need a job or a purpose and we take that very seriously. My job is to keep the green, fuzzy, round balls from escaping from the park. Not sure why ali always trys to help them escape, but everytime one goes flying or rolling away, I am at my best and my true nature comes out. Not to be boastful, but I am the fastest one at the park. I am usually under the ball before it even hits the ground, then I herd it in a circle and carry it back to my person and drop it at her feet. She knows how proud I am of my job, so I think that is why she keeps trying to get the ball to escape. She knows I will stop it everytime.   While doing my job keeps me focused, it also lets me use up a lot of my energy.   I don’t need starrybucks to get going in the morning… but I really need time at Hound Hill so that I can relax for the rest of the day.

In the weeks ahead, I hope you read about my life at Hound Hill. And while you may think its just a dogs point of view, wait, I don’t point… but anyway, I think you can learn a lot about people too from their dogs.

So for now, remember… more wag, less woof.

Bones of Wisdom

Happiness is like a cat.   If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you; it will never come.  But if you pay no attention to it at all and go about your business, you’ll find it rubbing up against your leg and jumping into your lap.   -William Bennett
