Pets have become very special members of our family. One has only to look around at all the new boutiques and gourmet foods catering to them to know times have changed. Now, this transformation reaches beyond life into the memorialization and remembrance of our cherished pets. “Quite simply, they are our family, and we want the best for them in life . . . and in death,” says Skye Stevens, co-owner and co-founder of Homeward Bound Pet Crematorium, which specializes in providing pet cremation services and memorial products. 

 

Pets weren’t always treated with the same dignity in death as they had been in life. The primary choice has been, Do you want the ashes returned or not? Pet-parents want more than the empty feeling of just walking out, wondering what will happen to their beloved pet, and waiting for a box to be returned to their veterinary hospital. Homeward Bound offers true caring and compassion to provide pet owners and veterinarians a long overdue alternative in aftercare and an open-door policy to provide the best support possible for grieving family members. Future plans include a memorial center and a private comfort and viewing room, as well as a special area for remembrance or memorial services.

 

Owners will be invited to bring their own pet to the facility, or may meet with the staff at the time the pet is picked up at the veterinary office. They will be able to stay with their pet with private time for good-byes, and they will be able to participate in planning a special farewell.
